Dear Bobbie--
I found a message where you were asking about your grandfather Dakan.I
believe I have some info . . .
My grandmother Edna Dakan had a brother named Eugene and a sister named
Margaritta. They grew up in Soquel, CA.Their mother was Frances Roberts
Dakan and their father was Eugene Dakan, son of Elmer Dakan, Sheriff of
Santa Cruz.I have a great deal of information about both sides of the
family and about their time in Santa Cruz/Soquel.
I grew up visiting Margaritta who lived in the family house on Soquel Creek
until she died in the 1980s. Her brother, Eugene, was a mystery to me -- I'm
still trying to figure out what really went on.However, I did/do know that
Eugene had a son by his first wife. This son was called "Buddy" because he
was a Eugene as well.Buddy's grandmother raised him in Soquel because
Buddy's father remarried after his first wife died.Grandmother Frances
never talked about Eugene (Buddy's father) after that, and Margaritta ended
up leaving everything in the family home to Buddy when she died. But it
turned out that the family home had never gone through probate when Frances
died, so that opened everything up again and brought into play relatives
who's names I had never heard before --- including a Howard Dakan.
I believe this Howard was your father.I believe that your grandmother was
Eugene's second wife.FYI, Buddy (your father's step brother if I am right)
was supposedly very bitter about having been "abandoned" by his father for
this second marriage. However, I believe it quite likely that this
bitterness was fueled by Grandmother Frances (your grandfather's mother),
who was an odd woman, to say the least.I should mention that your Grandfather's full name is Eugene Roberts Dakan.Buddy's full name is Eugene Francis Dakan. You can see how the historical names were passed along.
I do not know what happened to Buddy, other than he died in Port Lucie, Florida in 1998.
I'm trying to think what relation we are to each other.Your grandfather
would have been my great uncle. We're clearly cousins of some sort. This
is good, since the family has become very small in subsequent generations.
Margaritta had no children (she lived with Sal Sanfilippo, who I now think
was really a common law husband).Edna had two children, my father, Albert
Patrick Garretty and my aunt, Vivian Hallissey. My father died 20 years
ago, but Vivian is still alive and living in Concord, CA.She knows that
family secrets better than me.She had six children, but of all that, she
has only two grandchildren. And I am an only child who has had an only
child of her own.
By the way, you qualify as a California pioneer, since both Elmer Dakan and
Catherine Anne Root (Frances' mother) were in California before 1850.Also,
both of these families go back to before the Revolutionary War in the U.S.
Hope this helps.
