Mary Daley (Daly), Ormskirk, Lancashire

I am trying to solve a mystery about one of my great grandmothers. Her children's birth certificates give several versions of two completely different last names. We are absolutely certain that the children all have the same mother, so the mystery is why so many different names? The names are Daley (or Daly) and Hoare (also Hoar and Horan). First name is Mary or Maria.

My theory is that Mary was Daley at birth, had a brief marriage to Hoare, and then married my great grandfather James McGinn. But so far I have no proof. According to UK Census records, Mary was born in Ormskirk about 1853. She (as Mary Hoare) married James McGinn in Preston, Lancashire, in 1872. If the Census is right about her age, then she was just 19 at the time, so any previous marriage would have been pretty short.

The folks at the Ormskirk registry and my own search of the indexes indicate there is no Mary Hoare born in Ormskirk at the proper time, but there is a Mary Daley. I have been searching for a Daley/Hoare marriage (using all the variations) without any luck.

If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd be grateful.
