19c Dalgarnos in England

  of 188

The 1881 census shows seven Dalgarno families living in England. The heads of these families are William James (London, Shoreditch), Patrick (Hampshire), Ruth (London, Shoreditch), Jane (Bucks), George (Lancs), George (York) and James B (London). All of these give their birthplace as Scotland except for William James, Ruth and the George Dalgarno in York. Ruth is a Dalgarno by marriage and it is from her and her husband Alexander, who died in 1877, that I am descended. George Dalgarno gives his place of birth as London and he may well be a son of William James. However, it is this William James who is a bit of a mystery. In the 1881 census, he gives his age as 50 but his death certificate states 57, so he was probably born about 1823/24, but where? In the census, he gives his place of birth as London, but this seems unlikely as the census shows that all Dalgarnos born between 1793 and 1856 were born in Scotland. There is one good candidate for him in Scotland, a William son of George and Isabella(Nee Davidson) baptised in Old Deer on the 6th of February 1824. Alternatively, could he be related to a group of Dalgarnos that were present in Liverpool from the late 1840s to the 1860s? The IGI and BMD index show that a William and Susan(na) Dalgarno and a Peter and Ann Dalgarno had a number of children baptised/born in Liverpool over this period, but they have all disappeared by 1881. Where did they go, Canada, USA?
I think it is likely that the Shoreditch Dalgarnos referred to in previous messages descend from the sons of William James listed in the 1881 census, but his origin is obscure. Curiously, I have only found one of his sons, Garabaldi Dalgarno in the IGI and BMD index. The others, Charles and Henry as well as my gggrandfather Alexander remain elusive.
