Ted,
In spite of the fact that CHJD lists his name as David,
I think it's more probable that it was John and thus Esther's parents were John Reed and Martha Smith. John Dalgleish married Esther Reed on October 29, 1755 in Darien, CT. Their daughter, Esther Dalglish, was born October 31, 1756 in Hanover, NJ. Previously John was married to a woman named Thankful.

From the edball site (http://www.altlaw.com/edball/han_bapt.htm)

1 May 1748 - DALGISH, Dotia - dau of John and Thankful
1 Jul 1750 - DALGLISH, Thankful - dau. of John & Thankful
31 Oct 1756 - DALGLISH, Esther - dau. of John & Esther

The Presbyterian Church birth records begin in 1746 as shown
on the edball site. My ancestor, Joseph, was born in 1744
and married Martha Dixon in 1771. I think he was probably
the son of John and Thankful. In the same year, David Dalglish (probably his brother) married Jane Dixon (definitely her sister).

I know of other specific errors in the CHJD account, so it
would not surprise me if "David" turns out to be John.

Regards,
Don Douglas
