Ruth - sorry I have been a while posting a reply to your very interesting message. Ambrose Dallyn was born 1811 in Challacombe parish (Actually, in Challacombe village) in 1811. He married Elizabeth, born in Atherington (not far from Barnstaple) in 1815. Elizabeth was the daughter of Isabela, born 1781 in Chittlehampton, N. Devon. At the time of the 1851 census Ambrose and Elizabeth with children John (1842), Mary (1845, Isabela (1844), Selena (1848) and Martha(1850) all born in Challacombe were visiting with Isabela Harris, widowed aged 70, who was living with her unmarried children Mary, John and William, and described as "farmer of 85 acres of Land" at Bremridge, Atherington. Did he return to Canada, or stay back home in N. Devon, I wonder?
I shall e.mail you about the other Ambrose Dallyn. I am the great great granddaughter of another Amb. Dallyn who also lived in Challacombe - complicated isn't it?
