Hi Stephanie,
Yes, the George Damery you spoke of is Richard Damery's brother. They were both children of James Damery and Elizabeth Gosnell.George and Johanna had no children, but provided a home for Frank and Amanda Gabriel when they were orphaned.(The 1880 census lists Frank and Amanda with the surname Damery, but they should be listed with surname Gabriel).Their mother was Jennett Stevenson (born in Scotland in 1834) and their father was Joseph Gabriel born 1833 in Ireland.Jennett died in 1873 and Joseph remarried in 1875 to Mary McConaughy. Then Joseph died in 1882. The Gabriel family was closely tied to the Damerys even in Ireland, I believe.
George Damery died Dec 13, 1903 and is buried in the Macon Cemetery along with his wife Johanna who died March 28, 1912.They have a very nice large tombstone. There is a biography of George Damery in the (1883?)Macon County History book.I have a photo of George and his wife and also have a copy of Johanna's obituary which my grandmother had saved..if anyone is interested, I could post it here.Johanna was a devout Catholic whereas George was Protestant. Some say he was considered the "black sheep" of the family (maybe because he married a woman of the Catholic faith...this was quite a big deal for the Irish, as Protestants vs. Catholics has been going on for centuries).George was also an advocate of the temperance movement and a staunch member of the Prohibition Party. He had acquired 112 acres of land and had what was considered one of the best farms in the county (Macon).Hope this helps...Cindy
