Hello, David.
My father's grandfather, Carl Julius Damm, was born 1837 in Kustrin, Prussia, where he was raised a Lutheran. In 1856 he came to America.During the Civil War, he joined in Fond du Lac, WI.After the war, he settled in the New York City area, working as a German Baptist minister until he died in 1903.
Those are the facts that I have documentation for.The family story is that there was a "rich uncle" (brother to Carl?) who refused to help Carl's widow (Caroline) and only child (Samuel, my grandfather).
Guesses:Did Carl go to WI to live with family?Perhaps a brother?(There are a lot of Damms in that area.)Is my picture of Friedrich a cousin of Carl's.Perhaps a son of the "rich uncle"?Could there have been a falling out, perhaps over religion?Could my picture be of your Wilhelm Friedrich?
I don't think I can attach the photo to this message, but if you email me at [email protected], I'll send it to you.
Have you done any DNA testing?I may have to ask my brother or nephew to participate if I am going to find any answers.
Thanks, Joanne
