That is the same William Dampier, he was born in 1652 in East Coker, Somerset. He had a son and grandson both called William Dampier. The grandson lived in the Isle of Wight. The family then changed their name to Damp as far as I know there was rumours about them being persecuted by the French. So i am unsure if there were other family members who didn't change their name or if some began to reuse it at a later stage, we kept the Damp, this is my mum's maiden name.
Thanks
