History-Making Cattleman Dies
George W. Damron, a native of Laguna Canyon who went on to make history as a pioneer cattleman and banker in the Imperial Valley, is dead at 87.
Raised in the old "Gospel Swamp" area (now Fountain Valley), Mr. Damron died Saturday in a Burbank hospital. He had lived the past 18 years in N. Hollywood.
Mr. Damron, graduate of Santa Ana Business College in the 1800's was in the cattle business over a half century. At one time he owned the largest cattle ranch in Arizona, the H-Bar-V near Springville, and in 1900 led the first cattle drive into the Imperial Valley.
In 1904 he married Florence Helm, also a native Californian, at San Jacinto. His widow, born at Warner Hot Springs, still lives at the Damron home in N. Hollywood.
Turning from cattle to banking, Mr. Damron became president of the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Imperial in the 1920's. He retired 18 years ago.
During his lifetime he was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Imperial 45 years, was a member of the El Centro Elks Lodge 37 years, and belonged to the El Centro chapter of the Oasis White Shrine.
Mr. Damron's survivors include his widow, Florence Damron; four daughters, Mrs. Joseph D. (Georgia) Brunner, Santa Ana, Mrs. William G. (Faye) Woodman, N. Hollywood; Mrs. Addison (Bess) Carter, Van Nuys, and Mrs. Cecil (Annette) Gillett, W. Covina: one sister, Mrs. Laura McNaught, formerly of Santa Ana and now living at Pacific Grove; and two cousins, Mrs. Pearl Louck and Mrs. Doris Glines, both of Tustin.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Little Church of the Flowers, Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale.
