I assume that you are decended from Edward Daniell, son of Ralph Allen Daniell. I am decended from his elder brother Philip.

If Ida was your father's great aunt, that suggests to me that you are decended either from Laurence Daniell or Ralph Allen Daniell, both sons of Captain Edward Daniell.
If so, was your grandfather Groves Daniell the son or grandson of either Laurence or Ralph Allen?

Incidentally, it may interest you to know that most of my immediate family lives in eastern and central Otago.

I would be interested to read details of the family tree decending from Captain Edward Olivey.

The 'skeleton' you mention was Thomas Daniell, elder brother to both Philip and Edward. It is often assumed that he lost the family fortune gambling on horses but as far as I know there is not much evidence to prove the exact nature of the 'gambling'. It is always possible that the gambling in question was in the form of 'wildcat' mining in the hope of striking new deposits of ore. Wildcat mining is always a gamble and tends to be very expensive. Also, how rich was the mine at Porthtowan after seventy or so years of mining. Perhaps it was not so rich as it had once been and maybe it was felt that new ore had to be struck to ensure future success. Whatever the case, when my uncle went to Trellisick a few years ago and knocked on the door he was asked who he was. On saying that he was decended from Thomas Daniell the owner assumed that he meant the Thomas Daniell who had lost the fortune and said: "Oh. Very bad businessman! Well, you're not coming into this house if you're decended from him!"
