Hi William and Lee

I will put this reply in genforum for Lee.

I have been researching a (amateur) biography of Thomas Danyell c1420-1480 of Rising in Norfolk and Rathwire in Ireland. As I wrote in my genforum note he was a clever, charismatic rogue who accurately reflected the age he lived in. He married Margaret Howard a sister of the first Howard Duke of Norfolk and had one son Edmund born c1455. Edmund had five sons Edmund, John, Thomas, George and Edward probably born in the 1480s. The Margaret who married Richard Acton would have been born in about 1550, so if she was descended from Thomas Danyell of Rising and Rathwire she would have to be a grandaughter or great grandaughter of Edmund, John, Thomas. George or Edward. The children and grandchildren of Edmund, John and Thomas are well documented, so she would have to descend from George or Edward. I have not yet managed to find anything about George and Edward.

We have a curious coincidence. Thomas, grandson of Thomas Danyell of Rising and Rathwire, was a treasury civil servant throughout the reigns of Henry 8 and Edward 7. He retired during the reign of Mary and set up an estate at Acton in Suffolk. I do not know who owned the Acton estate before Thomas danyell but perhaps it was the Acton family. So maybe it is not a coincidence but a useful clue.

Edmund son of Thomas of Rising and Rathwire was overseer of the will of Henry Daniel of Appleton Norfolk. It is therefore probable that Henry was an uncle or cousin of Edmund. Henry had sons Robert, James, Oliver and Henry. Margaret born c1550 could be a grandchild of one of these sons. Oliver Daniel was a wealthy skinner in London.

John son of Edmund and grandson of Thomas of Rising and Rathwire was executor of the will of his cousin John Daniel of Felsted. John Daniel of Felsted is presumably a nephew of close relation of Thomas Danyell of Rising and Rathwire. His daughter married John Newport of Pelham. His nephew William Knightley was a lawyer and the grandfather of Sir Edward Coke ancestor of the Cokes of Holkham.

The Danyells of Buckinghamshire probably descend from George Danyell of Rickmansworth. The career of this George runs in parallel but slightly behind that of Thomas of Rising and Rathwire. For instance he was a squier in King Henry 6's household shortly after Thomas. In 1480s he was also granted lands in Bedfordshire. I suspect george was a brother of Thomas of Rising and Rathwire.

I will probably be able to unearth other clues as I sort out my notes but it will take some months.
