Thanks for this - I will need to study your suggestion further.
I'm obtaining a marriage certificate for John DANN (b. 1816) to confirm his father was James DANN. If my George's father is the same James H R DANN as yours then there appears to be perhaps a missing child somewhere around 1813/14?
I have obtained the death certificate for James H R DANN and am assuming that he is the same James DANN as in the 1841 census (with wife Mary and, presumably daughter Sarah). The certificate indicates his name as James Hugh Price DANN (not Ryse), a gardener, who died of pneumonia at Linton 3/11/1854, aged 82 years.
I have also followed up the Sheriff DANN in my George's line. I have both the marriage certificates for Sheriff but can find no record of a birth for him around 1850. I have also found the Sheriff name returning later on.
When the 1861 Census comes out on CD I will try to establish whether my George DANN is still in England at that time or had perhaps had emigrated to Australia - I went to the main London records office recently and had a quick scan through this Census but couldn't locate him then.
Thanks for your continued help.
