***Alice Louisa Kilbey - Frederick James Dann
Alice Louisa Kilbey was born in 1863 in Westwood, Warwickshire, UK and christened on August 23 of that year. Alice was the third daughter of Charles Alexander and Maria (Gunner) Kilbey. Charles was a stone mason.
Frederick James Dann was born in 1865 in Pevensey, East Sussex UK. Frederick was a florist by trade. He was the son of Jesse and Betsey Dann. Jesse was a builder, brickmaker and innkeeper. Jesse Dannís residence was called Percival House and was distinguished by a stained-glass fanlight over the front entrance bearing that name. The residence still stands today. So too does the New Inn, currently known as the Smugglerís Inn Pevensey.
Alice Louisa and Frederick married on October 24, 1893 in the parish of St. Andrew, Haverstock Hill in the County of Middlesex. Witnesses to the marriage were Albert William Kilbey and Florence May Kilbey, brother and sister of the bride.
Alice and Frederick were the proprietors of and resided at the Floral Retreat near Pevensey Castle. Frederick also cared for the Pevensey Pleasure Gardens just outside the castle wall. The Floral Retreat consisted of a tea room, tennis lawn, greenhouses and a manmade lake stocked for fishing. The lake was formed due to excavation for the production of bricks, most likely for the Martello Towers.
Frederick and Alice had two daughters. The first was Alice Maud, known as "Maudie" born September 5, 1894 in Westham, Sussex. Second daughter, Lillian Mabel was born in 1900, also in Westham.
Alice Maud became a teacher and never married. She lived to be 92 years old, finally passing in 1986.
Lillian Mabel married Mr. Craddock and had at least one child, a daughter named Phyllis. Phyllis, who married a Mr. McLaughlin currently lives in the East Sussex area.
Alice Louisa died in 1905 at the young age of 41, and is buried in Westham, East Sussex. Cause of death information pending.
Frederick lived beyond 1935. Death and burial information pending.
