Dansby Origins (The Real Story)

According to my father W.W. Dansby Jr. who has done exhaustive research on both sides of the Atlantic, the original Dansby who was most definately a Dane without question, was shipped from England (Portsmith, maybe) as a forced colonist or indentured servant round about the late 1600's to the island of Barbados. The English were in great need of colonists for their expanding empire. This was probably the result of being captured as a prisoner of war of English Forces (probably James or Cromwell). He could have been fighting as a mercenary or "draftee" but was not so lucky at that. After capture he was held at Newgate Prison to await trial and sentancing/transportation.

I have personally been to Barbados and seen the old original plantation site in Christchurch owned by John Dansby.
According to Bajan authorities and records this was the same John Dansby who was transported from England and somehow gained his liberty and then emigrated to the Carolinas. He obviously was released from servitude. He then became a successful planter and moved to South Carolina and obtained a second plantation and aquired many slaves. This is the reason many Dansbys are African American. It was a common practice for slaves to use the last name of their owners during that period. Additionally, my father has been to the town of Danby in England and tells me that any connection is slim to none. There is much more to the story if you are interested e-mail me back I like hearing from all of you Dansbys out there.
