Daphne:
Some time back, in studying the Dantzler family in the census schedules, I found some unusual info in both the 1850 and 1860 census records of South Carolina. Under the column labeled (value-real estate)in the 1850 census, I found several Dantzler families who had very large sums listed, such as $69,000 for one Jacob M. Dantzler (this under M432 Roll 857 page 301). As I am not unpacked from a recent move, I cannot locate the exact roll number for the slave schedules, but he had an enormous number of slaves.
The same thing happened in the 1860 census. One Dantzler had an amount listed as $32,000.
As I recall this man had 77 or 78 slaves listed. In South Carolina this large amount of real estate usually included the slaves.
Daphne, if you do not have the slave schedules for 1850 and 1860 for SC and cannot get them,, at some point in time, I will be glad to help you if you can supply the ages (approximate) of slaves, possibly the owners and the exact parish or district that they were from. There are no names listed on the slave schedules, but each slave, whether male or female, is itemized, one by one.
Hope this will help you.
Another way for you to look at these is to locate a Mormon Church (Latter Day Saints) that has a Family History Center. They will be able to order the film for you for a nominal fee and you will have the microfilm to look at for as long as you need it.
Best of luck in your search.
Jane
