THE MONTGOMERY MONITOR
Mount Vernon, Montgomery County, Georgia
Thursday July 29, 1886
The news has just reached here, that John Darley was killed this morning about 9 o’clock by Sonny Storey. It is a sad affair, to be sure.
I am sorry that the bad casualty happened to Rev. John Darley
On Tuesday morning John Storey and John Darley, two boys about 16 or 17 years old, with some other boys, were at work in the woods on a turpentine farm five or six miles above this place. It seems that Storey and Darley had been wrestling the day before, and Darley proved to be the best man. The other boys, and perhaps Darley, were teasing Storey about it, when he left the woods. Going to a neighbor’s house, he borrowed a shot gun and returning, shot Darley down without a word. He then left, and has not returned. Darley will probably die.
