Normandy 11th century, originally D'Erles.

Came over with William the Conqueror as supplier of horses, for which rewarded with land in the North of England : Derbyshire or Yorkshire, can't remember which. Tomb of Sir Edmund Darley in Darley Dale, dated 13th century.
