I am researching the Tonkin side of my family. They originated from the St Columb Major area of Cornwall UK.
I have found a copy of a letter written by Thomas TONKIN dated 28th April 1868 Darlington Wisconsin to his brother Nicholas Tonkin of Uniondale Susquehanna County Pennsylvanna.
He talks about a daughter Elizabeth who died aged 10yrs of a bowell complaint, Elizabeth possibly from a 1st marriage.
Thomas talks of a son Thomas presumably from his first marriage being married with 3 children and a Sarah, again possible daughter from 1st marriage being married to Ambrose GROTE. They have a daughter and live on a farm in Michigan USA.
Thomas indicates that he lived on a farm with his 2nd wife, no name given. The farm was of 33 acres held by his 2nd wife for her life time. His 2nd wife had four children from her 1st marriage who had all left home and settled on their own farms.
Thomas and his 2nd wife had 3 children, Edwin Albert Tonkin 21yr old at time of this letter, (b C1847) a school teacher and preacher. William Henry Tonkin aged 18yrs old (b C1850) who farms with Thomas (father) and Emma Eva Tonkin aged 15yrs (b C1855) who helps her mother in the house.
I do not have any other details so any information would be greatly appreciated
