Recent census and other information indicates Michael Dermody was born August, 1853 in Ireland. His parents were also born in Ireland. He immigrated to America ca 1865, and located for a time in St. Louis, MO, where he married Ellen Quinn, d/o Patrick and Margaret Slattery Quinn, ca 1879. By 1880, he, wife Ellen, and baby Joseph were in Mahaska Co., Iowa, where he was a plumber by trade. By 1887 they were in Wichita, Sedgwick Co., Kansas, where they were joined for a time by Ellen's brother, John J. Quinn, in the family plumbing business. John moved back to Iowa, but Michael and Ellen Dermody remained in Wichita and raised a family of 11 children. Michael died in 1902, but Ellen and the children kept the family plumbing business going for many years.
