Bryant, I was not online when you posted your message and do not remember if I ever answered you. My husband is not African American but I am learning to help those who are. So far I don't know how to do that kind of research but am going to a seminar this weekend to learn how.
I do know that all of the white GAMBRELLs in South Carolina were descended from John Gambrell and his wife Barbary; there is a book due to come out before too long and I know the author. I will ask her if she will have any info in her book about the black people in South Carolina with the surname GAMBRELL and if she knows of any who are currently researching the name... I'll be posting the info here when I get back from seeing her in May so that it may help others... post here if you have gotten any further with your research.
