Dear Jean,
Strange both our name is now White!! I was a Dawber. My father was always told that his family came from Wigan. So of course this is where I started looking only to discover that there were literally hundreds of Dawbers in Wigan. However a search of the Bradford Census of 1881 showed that my GGgrandfather was actually born in Lincoln. There is a whole clan of Dawbers there too, but not as many as in Lancashire. I have found out a lot since then, including Dawber had been changed from Dauber by my aforementioned ancestor. My Granny is still alive at 94 and she remembers George - strange to think she knew someone who was born in 1856! My family all now live in Halifax. I haven't found a Wigan connection yet but if you need any help I have lots of stuff from Wigan because of my early misconception. Let me know if I can help
