Someone with a construction or architectural background is familiar with the term daub and wattle. Basically, it is a form of plastering.....the daub being the plaster and the wattle being the wood thatching to which the daub was applied. A dauber was one who was a plasterer. 2) An alternative meaning is from DAUBE, the stave in a barrel. A Dauber was one who made the staves which were later assembled by the KUFREI or cooper to form a barrel. I have an ancestor, a MERKEL, who in the 700's is referred to as a dauber.........or one who made staves for a barrel. His family was associated with nine consecutive generations of barrel making. While there are many phonemic shifts as described by Randall, this explanation is not necessary when the normative naming sources are considered first: PATRONYMY: MENDELSOHN son of Mendel) CITY COUNTRY Haller person from Halle Landmark: Johann GROSSBAUM (John by Big Tree) DISTINGUISHING FEATURE Klein (small) OCCUPATION: DAUBER One who makes barrel staves or one who plasters.
