Betty: I have been involved in the Davenport DNA project from the beginning. We now have nine Albemarle Davenports tested and we are all of one DNA line. With the proven lines showing that our original North Carlonia Davenport was Richard R. Davenport b.1642 -d.1713. We are also closely related to the Rev John Davenports of Mass. and Conn. and the Thomas Davenports of New England. Our line goes back to Cheshire, England and recent DNA results from Sir John Davenport of Manchester, England confirm these roots. As you stated we come to England from Normandy in about 1068. I don't think we are french but Norman. There is a difference. The French are franks and the Normans are Viking or germanic. Do you have a male Davenport in your line that would like to be DNA tested? Several of my Davenport cousins have setup a fund for testing Albemarle Davenports. We usually help the older or retired fellows that want to know if their line is Albemarle but don't have the current resourses to do the testing. Here is a question that I have been working on regarding deeds and tax lists. I have a deed dated 1814 in which my 2nd. great grand father purchased 50 acres from Issac Davenport. The deed was not recorded in court until 1817. On the 1815 Washington County tax list it shows three William Davenports. One with 144 acres and one with 150 acres and one with none. The one with none is listed as the son of John. I am told that sometimes deeds were not recorded until the purchaser paid in full or had the money to pay the recording fee. My question is would the land still be shown as owned by Isaac Davenport until 1817 when it was recorded and thus show William May Davenport with no land at the time of the 1815 tax list? Since the court house burned three times I have been reading deeds in order to get a feels for the land sales that most often were within close families. It is noted that when William May Davenport purchased the 50 acres John Davenport was a witness. Was this John his father? So many questions regarding our Davenports between about 1750 and 1825. Let me know if you have a DNA candidate. Douglas
