Seeking information on a Davenport (or Devenport) household which shows up in the census for Hardin County, Illinois for 1850 and 1860. The father is living only in 1850 and his first name is hard to make out. My best guess is Barton or Burton. Could also be a botched spelling of Aaron, I suppose. He's 54 and a native of North Carolina. So he was probably born 1795-6. His widow is Eleanor in the 1860 census, though she shows up as Nelly in 1850. I can tell it's definitely the same family thanks to a son, Lowery. The mother is said to be a Kentucky native in 1860, but she said Tennessee in 1850. All of the children were born in Kentucky. My reason for interest is one of the daughters, Elizabeth. She's 13 in 1850. I think she's the same person as Elizabeth, 24, married to Elihu Surgill in the 1860 census and living next door to the Davenports. Both are Kentucky natives. Since I know Elihu and Elizabeth were having children by the early 1850s (By the way, it's actually Sturgill), and he has a newcomer to Illinois at that time, it stands to reason that his young Kentucky-born wife was most likely living with her parents in Hardin County in 1850. And she's one of only 2 Elizabeths in Hardin County close to the right age who are Kentucky natives in the 1850 census. Since her family lives next door to the "Surgill"s in 1860, it seems pretty likely that they are a match. By the way, the 1860 census says Elihu is a South Carolina native, but that's a Census-taker's error for North Carolina. From other sources, we know that Elizabeth (?Davenport) Sturgill died around 1868 and Elihu and their children moved to Lawrence Co., Ohio, where he had lived for a while as a boy and where several of his relatives resided. This is only of interest to Davenports if my guess is correct, of course. So anything I can find out about these Davenports, especially if it helps to confirm or debunk my theory, would be appreciated. Notify Administrator about this message?
