Davenport/Searing Connection late 1800's Morris County NJ

My father was Howard Searing Davenport Jr, born in Dover in 1921. His father was Howard Searing Davenport Sr.(1891-1958), his mother was Elsie Ann Ike (1891-1983) daughter of Isaac A Ike (1846-1904) and Elsa M. Kishpaugh (1853-@1910). Despite several name changes, sometimes more than one in one generation, I can trace the Ike side of my father's family back to Germany in the 1630's.

My grandfather's family, however, seems to dead end with him (Howard Searing Davenport,Sr); I recall no living greatgrandparents on the Davenport side and I never heard my father, who died in 1987, mention paternal grandparents or even aunts, uncles, and or cousins on his paternal line.I did grow up surrounded, when our family returned to Dover for visits, with great aunts and second cousins, all relatives of my paternal grandmother, Elsie Ann Ike Davenport.

I did hear as a child was that Searing was a family name, that it was my paternal great grandmother's maiden name, and also that my grandfather, Howard Searing Davenport had been an adopted child, something unusual in the 1890's when he was born. Also, my father carried on the Searing name as a middle name given to one of my five brothers,William Searing Davenport.

One might expect a geneaological dead end many generations back, and I find it most frustrating to have encountered such a complete brick wall just two generations back in my paternal line.

I'd appreciate any help anyone could possibly offer. I do have one aunt, my father's sister, who I believe is still living and might have this information, but we somehow lost contact in the 1990's after my father's death. Her name is Irene Davenport Ely who was married to Seth H Ely II until his death in 1998.
