Thanks for your reply, Douglas. I am not certain of James' middle name. My info has come from another descendant, and I've yet to contact her about it since reading your reply. I saw the 1850 census record, and have tried to figure out who the Swains were that this James was living with. I have him, his first wife Mahala, and children Edward, Henrietta (my GG Granmother) and Melissa listed in 1860 census. James' occupation is listed as what appears to be "Overseer." Now, going by something my gramma told me several years ago, I'm wondering about this overseeing postition--she told me that I had "kinfolk" who used to work at Somerset. This may be who she was referring to. I asked Ms. Redmond, director of Somerset, if there were any Armstrongs she could recall--(Armstrong was gramma's maiden name) NOT thinking that there could be any other name in the family! She didn't remember any Armstrong who had been there, so I need to contact her again to find out if this James Davenport is actually who gramma was talking about. According to the 1860 census, James had some property, so I do need to go to the courthouse and take a look around. I should find plenty of info, and I'd like to find out about where all of my maternal ancestors lived in the Scuppernong/South Fork area of the county. Both sides of my maternal ancestors came from that area, then moved to Gum Neck. Again, thanks for your reply--maybe I can get to the bottom of this soon.
