Susan:

Here is my full note on Oliver Davenport. If you need info on other members of the family. please contact me at nelsontsmith@verizon.net

The Woodbury, Orange County, NY Historical Society reports:

Davenport, Oliver (1723/26-1800/1) Son of Thomas the pioneer, and his second wife Elizabeth Leggett. The Davenport family was one of the first to settle in the region which would become Woodbury, and rented and farmed a large track of land running from Bull Hill to the Hudson River. Oliver was born sometime between 1723 and 1726. He married Hannah Seeley on July 12, 1747. They had four daughters and three sons by 1790 (according to the census), and are believed to have had a total of nine children. They lived in Orange County, NY for a time, as well as in the town of Wyoming Valley (Pennsylvania). He bought land there around 1776-77, and returned to Orange County in 1778. He went to Luzerne County (Plymouth) Pennsylvania, along with his son Thomas and his wife Charity in 1787. Oliver returned to the area in 1800. He died back in this area between 1800 and 1801. Oliver too signed the pledge supporting the Continental Congress in 1774.

Oliver Devinport (undoubtly Oliver Davenport) is listed in the Orange County Militia - Fourth Regiment under Colonel John Hathorn (Page 161 New York in the Revolution as Colony and State, compiled the the Office of the Comptroller, New York, published 1904 by J. B. Lyon Company, Alabany NY) and based on actual pay records.

Some time between 1776 and 1778 Oliver went with his son Thomas and his wife, Charity to Luzerne County Pennsylvania (near Plymouth). On July 10, 1778 Oliver purchased of George Dorrance of Kingston certain lands in Plymouth Township, Pennsylvania. On July 3, 1778, the Battle and Massacre occurred in Plymouth. 1777- 1778, Oliver's name appears in records of the Susquehanna County of Pennsylvania and Township of Westmoreland.

1790 Oliver is listed on the Orange County, NY Census as living in New Cornwall Town.

1791 Oliver purchased from Arnold Colt of Wilkes-Barra, Pennsylvania in Plymouth, PA.

1794 Oliver's residence is in Pennsylvania.

Some time between 1795 - 1800 Oliver moved back to New York. He is buried in Cheesecocks, Orange County, New York

Oliver Davenport's land passed to Susanna upon his death. By will Susanna passed it to Ashael. Ashael and Elizabeth Smith lived on the property. It is known in 1970 as the Theodore Bailey Estate of the original 150 acres.

Oliver Davenport's will Liber B Page 226 Extract OCGS Vol 14 No. 1 Page 7 1984.

I, Oliver Davenport, of the Town of Cheese cocks in the county of Orange and State of New York, having passed my days in this life to a considerable age and being weak in body but sound in mind and memory (blessed be God for same) and knowing that is appointed once for all men to die, Do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following (that is to say) In the first place it is my will and desire that all my just debts and funeral charges be paid out of my estate by my executors hereafter named. I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas all my goods and chattels lands and tenements belonging to me in the state of Pennsylvania. I give and bequeath unto my three sons viz, Robert, Stephen and Jesse to them their heirs and assigns forever all my lands and tenements belonging to me in the State of New York to be equally divided betwixt them subject however to some reserves to be mentioned hereafter. I likewise give and bequeath unto my four daughters Elizabeth, Frances, Hannah, and Susannah one hundred and twenty pounds each. And unto my granddaughter Charity Devenport only daughter of my son Samuel deceased I give and bequeath seventy pounds. And as to the money directed to be paid unto my said four daughters and granddaughter, It is my will and desire that my son Thomas shall pay unto my said granddaughter Charity the sum of fifty pounds and that my son Robert shall pay unto her ten pounds and that my son Stephen shall pay unto her ten pounds all which sums to be paid whenever she shall arrive to ye age of eighteen years.... I likewise give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth two milch cows out of my estate at large and as it is uncertain whether said Elizabeth get her legacy in land or money it is my will and desire that if she gets no land that she shall have during her life three acres of pasture and land adjoining John and Peter Lamoreaux's land and two acres of the best meadow on that side of the swamp.

I likewise give unto my said daughter Elizabeth two feather beds and bedding.
I likewise give unto my son Jesse one of my best beds and bedding.
I likewise give unto my daughter Frances one acre of land to be laid out between her house and my son Stephen's adjoining the road. I also give and bequeath unto my son Jesse and daughter Elizabeth all the residue of my estate. And I do hereby appoint my son Thomas and Clark Smith and George Coleman to be my executors to this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills by me heretofore made.

In witness whereof I said Oliver Davenport have hereunto set my hand and seal this ninth day of July in ye year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred.

Signed sealed published and declared to be his last will and testament in the presence of David Thorn, Rhoda (her mark) Conklin, William Thorn

After executing this written will I ye the said Oliver recollected those matters following which is also my will and desire that my son Robert shall pay unto my estate to my executors thirty five pounds being the money he had of me by ye hand of Clark Smith subject however to a deduction of ye costs and charges in ye suit of the widow Reynolds against me. It is also my will and desire that my said son Robert shall give unto my son Jesse one pair of four year old stears in lieu of a pair of bulls had of me.

There is no enumeration for an Oliver Davenport in the 1800 New York or Pennsylvania Censuses - it appears that he was deceased before the census was taken. Many times those early census were not completed until the next year, which in this case would have been 1801. He was alive on Jul 9 1800 when he wrote the will.

At the time of his marriage his father gave him fifty acres of land in Woodbury Cove (Central Valley in 2000), Orange County, NY. The fifty acres were later given to his sister Charity Davenport and husband John Lamoreaux. Land was purchased from Nathaniel Hazard, original Patentee, Land has NW line between original Evans and Cheese cocks patents as south boundary and from NE to include part of the present town of Central Valley and part of Mountain east of Central Valley.

Most of the above information was compiled by Dorothy Giles and Irma Franklin and published by Putman County Historical Society , New York, October 1962.
