John Davidson-Lincoln Co., TN-1820
Posted by: Bill Davidson (ID *****1886) Date: December 23, 2007 at 07:00:58
  of 6884

John Davidson was shown on the same census page as Briant (Bryant) Davidson on the 1820 Lincoln Co., TN census (and another...likely unrelated...John Davidson was over in Bedford Co., TN in 1820). Bryant Davidson married Sarah James in Grainger Co., TN on 17 Nov 1816, and a John Davidson was his bondsman. I suspect that these two men in Lincoln Co., TN were the same men who had been in Grainger Co., TN earlier. Per my research, the lineage of this John Davidson follows (some is a little speculative):

1 David Davidson-married to Sarah Unknown; died in James City Co., VA (JCCo) in 1687; born in Holland, per his 1686 naturalization papers. The Davidson land was just west of the Chicahominy River in a place called Pease Hill, and that land became part of Charles City Co., VA in 1720.

Note: There was also a William Davidson in JCCo who also died there in 1687 (per Bruton/Middleton Parish records). The exact "blood relationship" between David and William, if any, has not been proven. Some of the following men COULD have been William's descendants instead of David's descendants.

2 David Davidson-married Unknown; died 1756 in Charles City Co., VA; had a Stephen Davidson as the executor of his will. Besides those mentioned in 3, below, other apparent sons or grandsons included Solomon, Ezekiel, Hezekiah (my ggggg-grandfather) and Philemon Davidson.

3 William Davidson-born circa 1715-1725; married an unknown Hixe woman. William was in Goochland Co., VA by the 1740s with his apparent relatives (maybe/probably brothers) Edward and David Davidson. These three men lived in the part of Goochland that became Cumberland Co., VA in 1749. David bought 400 acres of land in Albemarle Co., VA in 1759, and that land became part of Buckingham Co., VA in 1761. All three of these men appeared on the 1764 Buckingham Co., VA tithe list. William then moved to Pittsylvania Co., VA by the late-1760s, and that land became part of Henry Co., VA in 1777 and part of Patrick Co., VA in 1791. It appears that William had sons named William "Junior," David, Goulder, Richard and John Davidson (these last three given names had been used previously in the "Hixe side of the family").

Note: Some members of this overall Davidson family were in the Morgan/Madison Co., AL area by about 1820 (including Goulder Davidson and his son Joshua, it appears). In addition, it appears that it might have been the above-mentioned William Davidson "Junior" who was in Orange Co., NC by 1780 (with sons named William, David and Josiah).

4 John Davidson-may have married a Bryant woman, based on the name of his apparent son Bryant Davidson, and based on a couple of Bryant households being in the Henry Co., VA area. It appears that John was in Stokes/Surry Co., NC by 1790, and in Grainger Co., TN by the early-1800s (where he appears in a few records). In addition to Bryant Davidson, other sons (or perhaps nephews) might have included a William Davidson and a Robert Davidson (based on some Grainger Co., TN records). There was also an Edward Davidson in Grainger in 1810, and he was probably either another son of John Davidson or maybe more likely a son of John's brother David Davidson (it appears that the brother named David Davidson died in Grainger before 1810...but no real proof....also, a Susannah Davidson (over the age of 45) on the 1810 Grainger census MAY have been David's widow).

Bryant Davidson (apparently died in the 1840s in TN) was later in Lawrence Co., TN, and it appears that the Jesse Davidson who was on the 1850 Lewis Co., TN census was his son. Back in "next-door" Lawrence Co., TN in 1850 was a Joel Davidson, and it appears that the widow of Bryant Davidson, Sarah (James) Davidson, was living in his household.

I wish that a living male Davidson from this family would join the DNA test so that we could see if he matches my DNA (Kit 44723 in Family 10; see: www.davidsongenes.org)
