William Davidson in Edinburgh, Scotland

Would like to correspond with anyone who has worked on, or may have info for, a Davidson family who came from Edinburgh, Scotland and who also has ties to Saint Vigeans in Angus (Forfarshire?) and also to London, England.

This Davidson family is connected by a marriage to John Marshall and his wife Magdalene Moonlight- they lived at Saint Vigeans, Angus, Scotland. John was born about 1805-1808 range, Magdalene was born before June 12, 1808, her christening date, to parents John Moonlight and Magdalene Scott.

I have names of seven children for John Marshall and Magdalene Moonlight, including daughter Elizabeth Marshall born July 17, 1837 at Saint Vigeans. She died Dec. 21, 1901 in Glasgow. Her husband was William Davidson born about 1842, census records always indicate Ratho or Edinburgh/Midlothian but I cannot find his parents and family of origin.

I hunted for two days to find a marriage for William and Elizabeth in Scotland- no wonder I could not find it- I checked the birth records of some of their children and it was consistently stated that William and Elizabeth were married in London, England. The date was July 19, 1864. There is an entry for them at LDS which states the place of their marriage was Saint Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London, England, Why in the world would they travel to this specific place to get married?

Their (first) child was born July 11, 1865- Andrew Davidson. Records show their children, at least the first three, were born in Edinburgh- I have found dates of birth for six of their eight known children. One of their sons was David Aitken Davidson born June 23, 1877 at Edinburgh. What is the significance of the Aitken name? As far as I can tell, there is only one daughter in this family- Magdalene Moonlight Davidson, born 1867, married a Thomas F. Clark from Ayrshire who was a wine and spirit dealer. I can find Thomas in 1901 but not Magdalene- what hap. to her? Another son John Marshall Davidson married Elizabeth Weir Melvin in 1897 at Glasgow. John died at age 39 years in 1908 in Glasgow.

I would dearly love to find William Davidson's parents, so am wondering if anyone has worked on his or his wife's family and has come across any info for him?

There was a large Davidson family which apparently originated at Saint Vigeans- a woman named Fiona who lives in Australia has posted info about them online. It just seems odd to me that William Davidson married a Saint Vigeans woman and wasn't from that same area himself.

I cannot find William and Elizabeth on the 1871 census in Scotland either- perhaps they were not even enumerated and may have been in transit, as they appear in 1881 and from there on, in Glasgow. William was a joiner by profession, appearing on earlier census records as a journeyman, but later on, a "master joiner". Was a joiner a carpenter?

I did find a death record for a William Davidson in year 1909 in Kelvin District, Glasgow- the death record matches him perfectly except it states he was the widower of "Elizabeth Henderson" and of course his wife was Elizabeth Marshall not Henderson. This death record states his parents to be Frederick Davidson and Catherine Forsyth but when I looked at old census records, their info just did not line up with William being born at Ratho or Edinburgh.

If anyone has any information, please post here, or contact me directly.

Thanks from Nora
