I found this forum quite by accident.
I'm compiling an expanded and corrected list of awardees of the Congressional Medal of Honor. I've been working on this for over 30 years, during which I've corrected a significant number of the errors and omissions in the Government's Official List of Recipients. I've developed a great deal of data from awardees, family and descendants and other private sources unavailable from Government records - which are often incorrect and/or incomplete anyway.
You're apparently aware he won the Distinguished Service Cross in Italy during World War II. This was recently upgraded to the Medal of Honor. I interviewed him by telephone shortly after he received the medal. He explained to me that his father was Filipino and his mother was of Mexican ancestry; hence, his "Asian" heritage (actually, many, if not most, Filipinos have as much Spanish heritage as Asian or Micronesian). He informed me he had been invited to speak before a group or organization of Filipinos or Filipino-Americans and I furnished him with a list of all other Filipinos who've been awarded the Medal of Honor, as well as addresses of family and relatives of many of these men so that he could contact them for background info.
I have a questionaire I've developed - to save time and expense (I've financed this project myself from the beginning - no government grants, etc. - and must keep costs at a minimum). He agreed to complete a questionaire so I sent one along with the info mentioned above. I never received a word of reply - or thanks. When I learned of his death in January, I made contact with a son-in-law (or someone claiming to be a son-in-law) in Wisconsin. I've sent a couple questionaires but, again, no response.
I'm in the process now of accessing his records. All I'm interested in is information directly relating to his military service and awards but usually it's "all or nothing at all" and you often wind up with all sorts of information you don't need or even want - criminal history, credit history, legal problems, etc.
If you're willing to share my expenses, I'll be glad to send you copies of his military info and anything I turn up that's of no interest or use to me. My only interest is preserving history - as accurately as possible. I'm not a garbage collector. This is completely legal and no consent or approval is necessary (the media, financial institutions, legal profession, etc., do this every day). If interested, e-mail direct.
