Our Dávila Family was originally from Arecibo, where Blas de la Candelaria Dávila was born. He was one of the founders of the town of Utuado on October 12, 1739. He is one of the oldest descendants from our family stem. His name appears on documents that Dr. Pedro H. Hernández Paraliticci reproduces in his book Utuado: Notas para su historia (San Juan, 1983), on pages 32 and 34. He is mentioned as «Blas de Abila» and also as «Blas de la Candelaria Dávila». Dr. Fernando Picó, in his book Libertad y servidumbre en el Puerto Rico del siglo XIX (los jornaleros utuadeños en vísperas del auge del café) (Ediciones Huracán, Inc., Río Piedras, 1979) mentions Blas Dávila on page 170, as mayor of Utuado in the year 1758 and who dies approximately in 1770. He was 80 years old. Thus, we acknowledge that his birth took place in Arecibo in 1690. However, there is no way to verify it; the archives of that year did not survive. Neither is his second surname known because it is never mentioned. Blas Dávila has an undetermined number of children in Utuado, but the documents of that time are not complete and it is impossible to mention them all. One of his children was Miguel de Ávila, who also appears dying on November 3, 1837. He was around 80 years of age because the (Parish of Utuado, Libro 5 de Entierros, Partida 456), indicates that he was born approximately in 1750. His wife was Petrona de Jesus. Miguel Dávila lived and had an 80 acre farmland in the area of Paso Palmas. He had nine children: María José, José Salomón, Beatriz, María de la Paz, Pedro, José María, Rosa, María Sotera and Bernardino, all Dávila de Jesús. From these children, José María Dávila de Jesús marries Juliana Villanueva de Torres on February 2, 1823. They possess various farmlands between Jayuya and Utuado. He dies in 1870 (Parish of Utuado, Libro de Entierros XI, and Partida 307). They have 5 children: Juan, Martina, José Loreto, Antonio Amador, and Basilia. From these children, José Loreto Dávila Villanueva marries Luisa Hernández de Ribera in 1851. They live in Mameyes in Utuado, PR where they possess a big coffee farm known as “San Felipe”. They have 11 children: Vicente, Francisco, Manuel, Carlos, Quintina, Bautista, María Juana, María, María Luisa, Felipe and Luis, all Dávila Hernández. Vicente Dávila Hernández (born 1853) marries Carmen Meléndez (second surname unknown, whom passes away before the 1910 US Census). He settles as a small coffee cultivator in 1890 in Tetuan, Utuado, PR. and they have 8 children: Dolores J. Dávila Meléndez (1880), Carmen Dávila Meléndez (1885), Ramona Dávila Meléndez (1890), Dolores M. Dávila Meléndez (1892), Bautista Dávila Meléndez (1895), Emilio Dávila Meléndez (1897), and Mercedes Dávila Meléndez (1900) who was my grandmother. My father was Luis Manuel Rodríguez Dávila (son of Atanasio Rodríguez Irizarry and Mercedes Dávila Meléndez). Mercedes Dávila died after the 1910 US Census of Tuberculosis…she was very young and left my father an orphan at a very young age (approximately 7 years old). I never got to know grandma Mercedes or any of her relatives. My father passed away in 1998.
