Chris:
I agree the conflict in name Thomas vs. Benjamin confuses the issue.
Abel Davis b. 1838, AKA Abel Ischabald Davis is recognized in a WorldConnect project as s/o Hannah Davis, b. abt. 1732 who m. Benjamin Davis, b. abt. 1728.
Benjamin Davis. d. testate, 1803 - Will G:68 executed 1799, proved 1803. His heirs are named: Hannah, wife; Ann, Sarah, Rachel, Elizabeth - daughters;Abel & Howell, sons & Martha Orison, Gr-Dau. If Hannah was b. 1832 she could not be the mother of Abel Ischabald Davis, b 1838.
Thomas Davis, d. testate, Will A:3, 1758.His heirs are named - Margaret, mother & John, brother. Margaret, wife of Thomas seems to comport with the Thomas, b. 1725 s/o Thomas & Margaret. A Margaret Davis is listed as a sister of John Davis - Will D:217, 1791,1792 - other heirs are Mary, sister; Thomas & Jenkin, brothers; Evan Davis, nephew, living in SC and Mary Toy, housekeeper.
Howell Davis s/o Bnenjamin & Hannah Davis, was b. 1759 and d. 1837.Howell was a witness to the will of Mary Simpson who d. 1814 and Executor of the will of William Middleton who d. 1828.Howell d. testate 1837 - Will X:370, 1836/1837:His heirs were: Sarah, wife; Amanda, Lucinda, Mary Tavenner, Hannah White, Sarah Gore &Nancey Everitt, Dau's;Benjamin & Joseph, sons;Benjamin, William, & Richard Tavenner- Gr-Sons; Elizabeth, Catherine and Sarah Tavenner - Gr-daus, children of Mary (Davis) Tavenner, dec'd., Eden White, son-in-law and Charles Hicks, gr-son.
Eden/Adin was s/o Benjamin White.William Gore, husband of Sarah Davis was the s/o Joshua Gore.
Abel Davis, b. ca.1764, with little doubt ismy ancestors/o Benjamin & Hannah Davis and brother of Howell. There is another Able Davis found in the 1820 census of Montgomery Co., MD who was probably the Able Davis found in the 1810 census of Loudoun Co., VA and perhaps was the father of Gideon Davis.I know that Abel's wife was Mary Huffman and that Mary was the d/o of John & Margaret Huffman.John Huffman was b. in Berks Co., PA in 1741 and d. in Loudoun Co.VA in 1792 - Will Book D:258, 1792. John's heirs are:Margaret, wife; Phillip, Peter, and Henry, sons.
The quote from VA References in Berks Co., Records notes, "11 Aug 1806: Abel Davis and wife, Mary, and William Smith and wife Elizabeth, both of Monongahela Co., VA, daughters of John Huffman, dec'd., appoint John Huffman, Jr. attorney to collect amount due from estate of their father John Huffman, late of Berks Co., dec'd. (Deed Book 22, 171)".This article appears in The PA Genealogical Magazine, Vol XXIII-No. 4, published in
1964.
Census records indicate Abel Davis was b. in the 6th decade of the 18 century - 1760-1770. Combined with other information suggests my G4 grandfather, Abel DAvis was the son of Benjamin & Hannah Davis.
