Hi!Just wondering what records you have for Richard Davis in Fayette county? My Richard and wife Elizabeth were living in Kentucky probably about 1783-1799 in Jessamine county area.Jessamine county was formed from Fayette county in 1798, so checking in Fayette county, I see Richard Davis in the 1788 tax list along with the Harris and Nicholson families that his daughters will later marry into:
FAYETTE CO., KY TAX LIST 1788
DAVIS, Augustin
DAVIS, Hannaniah
DAVIS, John
DAVIS, Joseph
DAVIS, Partrick
DAVIS, Richard
DAVIS, Robert
DAVIS, William
HARRIS, John
HARRIS, Thomas
NICHOLSON, Thomas
In the 1787 Russell county, VA tax list I also see, count them, 2 Richard Davis', along with Peter Nicholson, father of the two Nicholson boys that marry 2 of Richard's daughters.
"Russell County is located in the far southwestern part of Virginia. In 1745 the area now contained in Russell County was formed as a part of Augusta County. Between the years 1769 and 1785 it was contained in Botetourt, Fincastle and Washington Counties. Russell County was formed in 1786 from Washington County. "
I find Elizabeth, wife of Richard, enumerated in the 1810 Jessamine county census:
p.36 Davies, Elizabeth 01000 01101
1m 10-16 1794-1800 William
1 f 10-16 1794-1800 Lucy
1f 16-261784-1794 Mary/Polly
1f over 45 bef 1765 Elizabeth
She is listed as giving permission for 2 of her daughters to marry in 1803 and 1806, indicating that her husband Richard was deceased by that time.
In the Fayette county Order Books it appears that Richard is deceased:
Volume 1
Davis, Richd 65
Ordered that Edmund Bullock William Davenport and Hezekiah Harmon or any two of them be appointed commissioners to settle the accounts of Edward Davis administrator of the estate of Richard Davis decd and make report thereof t Court.
10 October 1803
Ordered that Edmund Bullock, William Davenport and Hezekiah Harrison, or any two, be appointed Commissioners to settle the accounts of Edward Davis, administrator of the estate of Richard Davis, dec'd, and make report.
So that fits in quite well.Since many of the Fayette county records were burned, I'm at a dead end:
Levi Todd appointed county clerk and had an office in the new courthouse, but kept the records in a small stone building at his home. This burned on January 31, 1803, destroying most of the records of the Court of Quarter Sessions and the County Court.Later that same year, 1803, the Courthouse itself burned, again destroying most of the records.
I did check all of the land records for both Fayette and Jessamine counties and strangely enough there are none for Richard or Elizabeth.Where were they living and with whom?
Since you have a Richard with quite different children living in Fayette county, can you make any sense between these two Richards?
