James Mason Davis
I've read several queries regarding James Mason Davis born ca 1827/1828 Rutherford Co. TN.
I am researching James Mason and wife Polly Hancock who moved to Rutherford Co. TN around 1817 from Brunswick Co. VA.James Mason, son of Christopher Mason Jr. and wife Martha.Polly Hancock, dau. of Benjamin Hancock and Sarah Stainback. Not only did James and Polly Mason move to Rutherford Co. but also Polly's brother Francis Hancock and wife Martha James along with other siblings and surnames of James, House and Edwards.
James Mason married Polly Hancock 23 May 1808 Brunswick Co. VA and by the 1810 Brunswick Census they have a baby daughter. Then in the 1820 Rutherford Co. TN Census James and Polly Mason have 2 sons and 4 daughters under the age of 10 years.I do believe the baby daughter in the 1810 Census had probably not had her 10th birthday when the 1820 Rutherford Co. TN Census was taken.
Thus, by the time James Mason Davis was born this girl would be around 18 years of age.I believe there is a strong possibility that this Mason daughter married a Davis and they the parents of your James Mason Davis.
The last court record we find for James Mason in Rutherford Co. TN is this one, however, there may be other records we have not located:
April 4, 1826 Book 6, p 200 Guardian return (deceased not mentioned) Francis Hancock is appointed guardian of wards, Mary A. Edwards and Sally B Edwards with special guardian JAMES MASON.
The Francis Hancock above was the brother in law of James Mason. The Edwards daughters were nieces by marriage to James Mason.
I have hit a stone wall in this Mason research in Rutherford Co. I do believe the oldest son of James Mason and Polly Hancock is the one I'm hoping to locate to aide a participant on the Mason Worldwide DNA Site. His ancestor exactly matches other descendants of Christopher Mason Jr. and this man married the next county over in 1833. He also named his first son James Mason.
Did James and Polly Mason die prior to the 1830 Census? If so, with whom did the children reside?
Please contact me directly if you'd like to further discuss this Mason and Hancock family.
Thanks,
Carolyn Mason Anderson
