Hi:

I am a direct descendant of David Lovejoy Davis born on January 1, 1806 in Maysville, Mason Co., Ky. He is one of the sons of James Davis and Susannah Orme. His older brother, Moses H. Davis was born in 1804 and died in Carter Co., KY. I have been to his grave but was many years ago. My David Lovejoy Davis moved with his parents and siblings to Rush Co., IN where James Davis died in 1830. I have been to the courthouse to look thru the papers of his estate, but that was also many years ago. It listed all of his children. David Lovejoy Davis later moved to Des Moines Co., IA died in 1880 and is buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. I have been to his grave.

David Lovejoy Davis married Susannah Orme, daughter of Moses Orme and Elizabeth Davis on December 9, 1801 in Mason Co., KY. His bondsman was Elijah Davis. I suspect that he might have been a brother, but a close relative anyway if not a brother. David Lovejoy Davis also has a younger brother names Nicholas Davis and settled in Illinois.

Mentioned in Pennsylvania and it seems as the family was migrating from Maryland, they made a short stop in Washington Co., PA before moving to Mason Co., KY. The 1790 census of Washington Co., Pa shows a Joseph Lovejoy and a David Davis on the same page next to one another. Joseph Lovejoy is listed as a male over 16 and two females. David Davis is listed as a male over 16, plus another male over 16, three males under age 16, and three females.

It would indicate to me that Joseph Lovejoy was head of household with wife, and one daughter, which would take care of the marks for 1 males and 2 females. This kind of indicates to me that this is a younger family.

I am not sure but I might make a guess that Joseph Lovejoy's wife was a Davis and a daughter of David Davis whom he is next to in the 1790 census. The marks for David Davis indicates an older family with the head of household over 16, plus one son over 16 and then three sons under the age of 16. There are 3 females, one might be the wife and two small girls.

There are two other things that could be helpful which I have found on Family Search are some birth records in Maryland.

From the Evangelical Luthern Church in Frederick Co., MD are the following records:

Elijah Davis b 25 Nov 1780 c on 25 Dec 1780 son of David and Dorothea Davis

Nicholas Nailor Davis b 28 Sep 1778 c on 25 Oct 1778 son of David and Dorotha Davis

Elizabeth Lovejoy b 24 Feb 1777 c on 24 Aug 1777 daughter of Joseph and Sarah Lovejoy.

Samuel Lovejoy b 10 Aug 1779 c on 18 Oct 1779 son of Joseph and Sarah Lovejoy.

This is all that I have found so far.

Hopeful some of this information will be beneficial to someone.

Fred Davis
Dallas, TX
great-great-grandson of David Lovejoy Davis
