Davis's who were actually Cherokee in KY late 1700's???

I was looking through some posts and saw a reference to some Davis's who were Cherokee??? My family tree hits a road block at James & Priscilla Davis, parents of Elizabeth Davis who married a Whiteley, yet there is a family tale that says we have Cherokee in this line. I dismissed this, thinking there were no names that sounded possible, until I say that post.
Does anyone know any thing about Cherokee Davis's in Kentucky in the late 1700's???????????????
(Probably a long shot!)
