William 2d was named exec. Grandson, William 3rd, and cousin, Isabele Davison, were named.

bio. William Davison came to NJ 10/1684 as an indentured servant to Thomas Fullerton, and lived in
Monmouth Co. NJ. He was a carpenter and landowner. per Ruth Davisson (1969 letter), Lost Creek WV.
bio: Wm Davison came from Scotland to NJ as a Protestant Redemptioner. Protestants left Scotland
due to religious persecution. Passage to America was exchanged for several years labor, thru which
the workers "redeemed" themselves, and were discharged. Hence the name "Scotch Redemptioners."
per K Fleming. William Davison came to America in 1685 from Leith, Scotland. Tradition has the
ship name the "Caledonia." He arrived in East Jersey in late 10/1685. He came as an importation of

bio: William Davison emigrated from Scotland to Freehold Twp, Monmouth Co, NJ, arriving in Oct 1684,
pos. aboard the Caledonia. He was among earliest immigrants to Freehold Twp. Emigrants Davison and
Oliphant, and others, settled near each other about 5 miles north of the present site of Old Tennent
Church, near Freehold, NJ, then moved about 1 mile S.W. of Old Tennent Church as
shown by deeds. Reid conveyed to William Davison. William Oliphant, brother-in-law to William Davison,
owned land adjoining William Davison. When Wm. Oliphant died, his land was inherited by his sisters,
Margaret [Davison] and Janet [Layton]. Wm. Davison bought the Layton 1/2 interest. Presbyterian
families were driven from Scotland by religious persecution. In NJ they worshiped first in homes as early
as 1690. By 1707, a log meeting house was built about 5 miles north of the present site of Tennent Church, known as "old Scots Church." Abt 1732 the Old White (Oak) Church was built at the present site of Old Tennent Church. The new Tennent church was built 1751. These settlers made homes for themselves out of the wilderness, where no other settlers had lived before. They cleared the land, planted crops, and acquired farm animals. There were no towns or churches until they built them.
William Davison was a farmer and carpenter, and he built houses for many other settlers. Wm married Margaret Oliphant, prob in late 1690s. Much later, railroad tracks were built across their land, destroying the family buring ground. It is said that the Battle of Monmouth ( 6/28/1778) was fought from a battery position on Wm. Davison's land and that it was from the brook on Wm Davison's land that American Revolutionary heroine Molly "Pitcher" [Hays] carried water to the fighting patriot troops, and that James, John and Wm Davison fought there for independence, with Molly Pitcher's husband, John Hays. per M Taylor. per K Fleming
bio. Abstract of a 2/20/1969 letter from Dorothy Ruth Davisson to Bl Griffin : NJ Davison research was done by Ed J. Raser, NJ Gen Soc & Editor of its Mag. He to do book on NJ Davisons. All Harrison Co WV Davissons came from NJ, thru DANIEL DAVISON line, which is not related to our WILLIAM DAVISON line while in America. HOWEVER, they were both from Scotland, and are thought to be related there, but there are no known ancient records. The two families owned adjoining land near Princeton NJ. Tradition says that a Josiah Davison, father of at least 8 sons, most of whom came to Harrison Co WV in the 1700s, decided to spell his name with double "ss" to separate the families. The Duck Creek/Lost Creek Davisons started using two ss about 1830s, after the Daniel Davissons in Clarksburg WV. As the family spread west some spelled it Davidson.
bio. "A few months later [after the first William arrived in NJ from Scotland], another William [Davison]
sailed from the port of Leith, Scotland and arrived in NJ late in 1685. He came as an importation of Dr.
John Gordon of Montros, Scotland. It appears that the compiler of the Davison genealogy [i.e., Arthur
Henry Davison] refers to this Davison as the one who m. Margaret Oliphant. She was either the sister or
dau. of William Oliphant, who came from Scot. in 1685 with the George Scott refugees. He located land
adjoining William Davison. Wm Oliphant mortgaged his land and soon died. Margaret and her sis. Janet,
wife of Samuel Layton [Laton} were his heirs. The place of burial of William Oliphant and Margaret
Oliphant is unknown." also " record of a will dated 4/6/1723, in which he bequeathed land to sons William,

bio. William Davison 1st was forced to leave Scotland due to religious persecution of Presbyterians. By
1707 a log meeting house was built about 5 miles north of the present site of Tennent Church, known as "
Old Scots Church." Wm 1sts sons contributed to the Old Tennent Church and probably helped build it.

Issue 1&2 p.17. William was said to be Scotch Irish, and conducted a tavern located on the main
highway between Trenton and New York. He attended Baptist church. per Upper Monongahela Valley
by Butcher, p. 1135. See also a Duck Creek history by Charles H. Washburn (prob. Charlestown
newspaper 1/1/1939) Which gives William, Sr. as father of Elizabeth and Anna Davisson. Edward
Newton Smith (1851) in his hand written pedegree chart, recited his grandmother as Elizabeth Davisson
dau. of William Davisson who married Elizabeth [unk].

Andrew, NOT William, was father of Elizabeth. (Russell Davisson, author of Hist of Davissons 1630-1992,

Co. NJ) Donelly attributes the error of assigning "WILLIAM" as father to Bernard Butcher's Upper
Monongahela Valley (1912, repub. 1978 p. 1134-35), which was then copied down by others, until it

whose name is unknown. He died after 1780 when he and Sarah Smith Davison signed a deed. He is
supposed to have visited his two daughters and son William, Anna Davison Gaston,
Elizabeth Davison (Mrs. Watters Smith) of Duck Creek around 1800, but went on to Green Co or Fayette
Co PA 'where he died.' He is supposed to have had another son in Penna., name lost to the family. per

BIO: This family is said to have used the spelling "Davisson." The biography of Waters Smith in the
Comstock Encyclopedia of WV, says that Anne and Elizabeth are the dau.s of William Davisson. M
Taylor says that Andrew was the father of these two, not William. Evidence is that Anna named her first
boy Andrew for her father, as was the custom. Harrison Co death records of Anna Davison Gaston show
her parents were Andrew and Sarah Davison. per M Taylor.
bio. ANDREW DAVISON, b. in NJ 1725-1735, d. aft 1788 and bef 1801, m. Sarah Smith, dau of John
and Hannah Smith. Sarah Smith was b. in NJ abt 1740 and d. aft 1810 when she appears in the Harrison
Co VA US Census. In 1801 she signed a quit claim deed to John Gaston. Family tradition
says Andrew Davisson d. in Fayette or Greene Co PA. Andrew Davisson and Sarah named as parents

By this time, their son William was already married to Mary Maple, daughter Anna was married to John
Gaston, and daughter Elizabeth was, or soon would be, married to Watters Smith. These three families

BIO: NOTE VARIANCE w/ WILLIAM and ANDREW. William Davisson, Jr. the son of
William? Davisson [not ANDREW DAVISSON as stated by M, m. Mary Marple of
Philadelphia PA. During the British occupation of Philadelphia, Mary Marple was a
companion of Sir Henry Clinton's daughter, and was a Tory. per Hacker's Creek
Journal VII Issue 1&2 p.18.

bio. "William Davisson (b. NJ) m. Mary Marple [Maple] (b. NJ, burried on Duck Creek,
unmarked grave) was the first of [Dorothy Ruth Davisson's] line to migrate to Duck
Creek, Harrison Co WV in late 1790's, with his two married sisters. He had children in
NJ. He was in the Revolutionary War but not certain of his records. Dorothy Ruth
Davisson said her grandfather said that William carried dispatches around Phila, PA.
The night before the battle of Monmouth 6/1779? He bought land at Lost Creek in
1807, was dead before 1844. No birth or death records for him or his wife. Several

bio: The son of Wm Davisson was William Davisson Jr., who m. Mary Maple of New
Jersey and Philadelphia. Wm Jr settled near the mouth of Lost Creek, where he
operated a mill. The old mill race is in a thicket just south of the present [1939] Lost
Creek bridge. The mill stood where the bridge abutment now is. They later moved to
Duck Creek. Wm was the bro in law to Waters Smith and John Gaston, thru his
sister's marriages.

Beryl Griffin [mother-in-law of Floris Davisson, Jr]: "Mary Maple
Davisson [wife of William Davisson] lived as a 'companion' probably a
'maid' to Sir Henry Clinton's daughter, when he was General of the
British troops occupying Philidelphia. After Mary married and moved to
Harrison Co WV, the Clinton dau., now married, sent for her to come to
Philadelphia, to baby sit with her children while she visited relatives in
England. Mary and William rode horseback from Duck Creek to
Philadelphia. When Mary came home she had a trunk full of ribbons, silks
and other finery from England given her by the Clintons."

BIO: Anna was dau. of Andrew Davison. Anna was sis. of Elizabeth Davison. She is
called Ann, Anne, and Anna, and both Davison and Davisson. The newer spelling has
two "ss" and seems to have been
adopted by the clerk of the court in Harrison Co. Anna's father was Andrew, as shown
by the Anna Davison Gaston death record at the Harrison Co WV courthouse which
says her father was Andrew Davison (showing the "correct" Davison spelling), per
M Taylor. Harrison Co death records of Anna Davison Gaston show her parents
were Andrew and Sarah Davison. John and Anna removed from Monmouth Co, NJ
where they were probably married, with her sister, Elizabeth, and brother-in-law
Watters Smith, to Duck Creek, Harrison Co WV. They came by way of PA and it was a
long journey. They appeared to arrive abt. 1796, per WV Heritage Encyc. per M

bio. Abstract of a 2/20/1969 letter from Dorothy Ruth Davisson to Beryl Griffin [mother-
in-law of Floris Davisson, Jr]: A death record at Clarksburg names Andrew and Sarah
Davison as Anna's parents. Another letter dated 11/1/1967 from Dorothy Ruth
Davisson to Mrs. Davidson (Indiana branch?) says siblings William/Anna/Elizabeth all
names their first sons "Andrew." Anna Davison Gaston's death certificate naming her
parents as Andrew And Sarah Davison was based on information given by
her son William Gaston - 1854.

Foreman's 2nd Regiment of Monmouth Co NJ Militia, in 1778-80, as shown by 8/19/
1780 rolls, in the St. of NJ Dept. of Defense. He supposedly came to WV in 1796. per

1799, with his wife, Ann Davisson, from NJ. He built a cabin on the east side of the

bio. Newspaper story quoting Arlie Smith says "William Davisson, father of Elizabeth
and Anna." After William Davisson lived in WV for a while, he longed for the more
civilized east, and went back toward New Jersey. He only went as far as Greene
County PA where he lived for the rest of his life.

BIO: Watters moved with the Green family thru PA, and settled on George's Creek in
what is now Fayette Co PA, but was claimed by VA. He served as a militiaman during
the Whiskey Insurrection to retain order for the new federal government. He was a
neighbor and aquaintance of Baron Steuben, the Prussian officer who trained the
American army. He lived near the home of Albert Gallatin. In Spring, 1796, Watters
and the Greens moved to Harrison Co WV, and settled on Duck Creek in the
southern end of the county. They were among the first settlers of Harrison Co VA now
WV. There were 4,848 known settlers in 1800 in Harrison Co. WS bought a farm on
Duck Creek at West Fork for 60 pounds by deed dated 1/21/1792 from John Prunty, a
former sheriff, of 200 acres at Liber 1, Folio 258. [This original deed is on display at the
Watters Smith State Park museum 6/1993. Land adjoined Thomas Smith's land also
purchased from Prunty on 9/18/1787, which farm was later purchased by William
Davisson, and settled on by some heirs of John Gaston who married Ann Davisson,
the sister in law of Watters Smith. Watters was one of four neighbors who founded
the Broad Run Baptist Church in 1804, known as Good Hope Baptist Church. Watters
was the first deacon, and Job West the first clerk. per Upper Monongahela Valley by

Smith Fam ts, by Arlie Smith. bio: per Hacker's Creek Journal VII Issue 1&2 p.18, a quotation from the WV Review for 7/1932 says: "The Society for the Broad Run Church dates back to February 5, 1804, when Elder John Carney of the West Virginia Board of Missions held a meeting, probably at the home of Watters Smith on Duck Creek, Harrison County. An organization was formed to be known as the Good Hope Baptist Church, with Smith as deacon and Job West as clerk. Other charter members were Mrs. Watters Smith, Mrs. Job West, Samuel Romine and wife, and Solomon Squires and wife. Job West kept the records on brown paper. They were written with a pencil made of lead from bullets.
The name of the church was formally changed from Good Hope to Broad Run in 1818.
