Dorsey/Darsey/Dawsey/Dossey/D'Arcy etc DNA Study Website

I have just uploaded a website to explain the objectives and rationale behind the Dorsey/Darsey/Dawsey/Dossey/D'Arcy etc DNA Project that I launched this week.

The 1880 census enumerates 3530 white males with the surname Dorsey. Of those, 457 were born in Ireland, 33 in Canada, and 20 in England, 18 in France, and a smattering from eight other countries. It is unlikely they are all descendents of Edward Darcy of Maryland and even if they are, many of them had wandered so far by 1880 that little documentation exists to connect them to their origins. Add to this number, 716 white males by the name Darsey or variants including D'Arcy, 74 by the name Dawsey, and 54 with the name Dossey. The same census reports 2445 black males with the surname Dorsey, 105 named Dawsey, 88 named Darsey and 44 with variants of the surname Dossey. There are varying opinions about whether these surnames descend from a common origin or whether they are separate. DNA testing can help determine which of these groups share a common origin and could benefit from combining their efforts.

I hope everyone will visit www.contexo.info/DorseyDNA whether you plan to participate in the project or are just(URL IS case sensitive) wondering about it. There are instructions there for signing up as well. (And I apologize for only using the name Dorsey in the URL--it could get really cumbersome if I included all the possible variants:) I hope everyone will click on and enjoy the link to the story of how our family used DNA to solve an old family mystery.

Because the DNA used in this type of test is from the Y chromosome (male), this project is only open to males who are direct line Dorsey/Darsey/Dawsey/Dossey/D'Arcy descendants. (Other variants are welcome. If you think you might connect, this is the way to find out!) If you are not a direct line male descendant, you may be able to find someone of your line to represent you. My first cousin very graciously provided me with some of his DNA--a light brushing from the inside of his mouth which he did in the privacy of his own home.

As of this afternoon, we already have five members in the project and several other people out searching for a representative of their line.

I will post a short announcement whenever our results page is updated for those who want to follow.

Please write to me privately if you have more questions after you have
studied the website. I look forward to hearing from everyone.

Thank you all,

Nancy
