Robert Thompson Day, 1846-1892

I'm a playwright doing research on the shooting death of Thomas Clinton Beebe at the hands of Robert Thompson Day on Oct. 9, 1891, near Day's farm on the North Fork of the Lewis River, near Woodland, WA. Day was ultimately hanged for the crime, although he denied his guilt up until the end. My play will be a historical drama focusing on the unlikely friendship forged between the sheriff and his prisoner.
According to my research, Robert Day was born in Tazewell County, Va., and served in Company I, 16th Virginia Cavalry, in the Confederate Army. A some point in the war he received a battle scar of a saber across his chest.
Before coming out West, he worked as a coal miner in Benton County, Ala.
Any additional information about his life and character would be welcome.
