Deaths in that period are indexed on microfilm that you can borrow through your local Family History Center. Follow the link on this page for the catalog listing for the microfilm:

The Washington Post usually printed a list of deaths as reported by the Health Department (just names, not obituaries or paid death notices) in that era. You can search the Washington Post back to 1877 at the Post website. There's a charge to access full text of the articles. A library near you may offer the ProQuest service to its patron at no cost, including the Post archives.
