This is in reply to a posting at the New York State GENFORUM.

Since you give little particulars about Jacques MASSAM and his family, here is some speculation on my part.

In 1841, Jacques,35, and wife, Catherine,35, are enumerated in Rippingale, Aveland, Lincolnshire with several children and a Harriett CAWTHORNE, age 15. Other children-Ann,10; Jemima,9; Jane,7; Edwin, 10.

In 1846, 18 August, Jacques,40, and wife Cattie,40, arrive in NY City with several children. Harriett MASSAM age 20 is included. Could she be the former Harriett CAWTHORNE, bride of an unknown son William? Other children listed on manifest-Edwin, 15; Ann,13; Terence, 13; Jane, 11; Lucy, infant.

In 1860, 22 June, at New Castle, Delaware, one finds a Jamima HARRIS, 27, widow with 2 children-Benjamin,6 and Ida,3. Also included in the household are Anna WILLIAMSON, 13 and Jane MASSAM, 25, tailoress. I would speculate that Jane and Jamima are sisters and daughters of Jacques and Catherine MASSAM.

In 1870, 25 June, at New Castle, Delaware, one finds a Jacob MASSAM, age 65 retired living with a Harriett MASSAM, 44, keeping house. I suspect that this is Jacques and his daughter-in-law, Harriett CAWTHORNE of the 1841 England census. Also, included in the household are William H., 18, Harriett, 15, Mariah,10, Annie,6,and Charles E.,4. All born in Delaware. These children are probably Jacques' (Jacob's) grandchildren, although this is not stated.

In 1900, 9 June at Camden, New Jersey, one finds a Harriett MASSAM, 74, living with two children, William H., 47, a teamster and Harriett,44, a worsted spinner. Harriet, the elder had 8 children and 4 living at the time of the census.

I am not related to this family. Pass the genealogical assistance forward. Help someone else.
