Lucinda DEAN, reply to Sheila
Body of Message:
I am also researching Lucinda Dean, but this one was married to Richard Withrow, 1861. I just got the lead on Richard and Lucy, so I have got lots of info and have seen lots of conflicting info.
The best info I got came today from two Braxton Co, WV lookup volunteers.
1860 Braxton Co. census, #241-233
William Dean, 65, farmer
Richard, 21, farmer
DanielW., farmer
Rachel, 14
William, 10
Mary Ann, 27
LUCINDA, 14
Ellis G., 4
Kile, 2
(All born in VA)
Now, here is another lookup, which I assume was also Braxton (I am getting help from another source to help request these)
1860 Census
Lucinda DEEN, 25 living with
Ervin BRAGG, 27, VA farm laborer
George DEEN, 9
Joseph DEEN, 4
OK, here is where the conflicting evidense comes in. The Lucinda Deen above is popurally believed to be the daughter of William DEAN and Nancy KILLENSWORTH. She is not because as you can see above, William Dean's daughter Lucinda was 14 at the time the same census listed the older Lucinda living with Ervin Bragg!
In the 1850 Braxton Census it shows the William Dean family as follows:
William Dean, 54
Nancy Dean 47 (Nancy must have died before the 1860 census, my guess is two years prior because they have a two year old son in 1860, unless he belongs to one of Williams older siblings.)
Mary Ann Dean, 19
Jacob, 18
Richard, 12
Westly, 10
Rachel, 4
Lucinda, 4 (must have been twins)
William, 1
I also got information for the family of FERDINAND DEAN AND MAHALA CRITES, this source of info comes from the research of Ronna Cunningham, given to me by Lisa Gregory. I am giving info in part to save time, but I would be happy to give anyone complete info.
Ferdinand Lair DEAN, born 1810, Pendelton Co, VA
married Mahala Crites, 1835
Children of this marriage:
James Dexter, b 1836
Mary J, b 1838
LUCINDA , b 1839
William Lorenzo, b 1843
Elizabeth, b 1845
David P., b 1845
Jacob W. , b 1846
John W., b 1849
Issac N., b 1850
Mahala , b 1850
Harrison L, b 1852
Leonard, b 1854
? Dean, b 1856
Marshall F, b 1859
Abraham F., b 1861
Most of the births can be verified through Upshur County Births, I think I accessed it through the Braxton Co, WV website on genweb.
I think your Lucinda is the daughter of Ferdinand and Mahala. I also believe that William and Ferdinand could be brothers. They both lived in Braxton, and had children with similar names.
I looked in familysearch.org for Lucinda Dean and came up with one with a marriage date for Lucinda and Ervin Bragg. It is 27 AUG 1871, in Sutton, Braxton Co., WV. This one lists her parents as William Jacob, and Nancy Killensworth (which I believe is incorrect). I also came across something tonight with the names of their combined children, but I can't remember where, because I knew she wasn't mine now, and I didn't copy it. It must have been on another message board.
Like I said, this is all new to me, but I think they above evidence is strong enough to at least get us both headed in the right direction.
If you want to e-mail me direct then I can give you everything else I have found.
By the way, the source for the marriage of Richard Withrow and Lucy Dean, married Dec 23, 1861 was Wes Cochrans book "Braxton County Marriages 1836-1875". I bet you could find yours in there too.
Good luck to us both.
