I am searching for information on my wife’s GGF James Andrew “Jack” Dean, born 21 Dec 1871, Harnett Co. NC; died 14 Sep 1948, Wake Co. NC. According to one of his grandsons, Jack was an illegitimate child raised by his grandmother. The 1880 US Census for Harnett Co. NC (Buckhorn Twp) shows a James A. J. Dean, age 8, “grandson” in the household of Jinny Dean, age 63, and this is most likely the Jack Dean of this query. His death certificate lists no father. In the space for name of mother, the word “Baker” is written, but crossed out with “OK” penned beside it. Find A Grave provides a photo of his grave in Wake Co. and adds “Son of John W. and Martha J. Dean” (entry # 74884559). My attempt to verify and/or determine the source for the names of his parents was unsuccessful.
Jack married Ardelia Jones (1873-1951), daughter of William H. and Elizabeth R. Jones of Chatham and later Harnett Counties. Jack was a hat salesman and in the 1920s owned a small hotel on main street (N. Salem St.) in Apex, Wake Co. He was active in the Salem Baptist Church of Apex, where he is buried along with Ardelia. They had at least 3 children: Lettie (1904-1979) mar. Ollie T. Mills, Sr.; Julius (b.ca. 1910); and Jesse (b. ca. 1912).
Any information on Jack’s biological parents, and other ancestors, will be much appreciated.
