Anyone out there familiar with Charles L. Deane? He was my great-grandfather. According to family lore, he was born in 1835 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He snuck aboard a ship when he was very young. The sailors, told he was being beaten by his step-father, let him stay onboard. He was known as "The Little Captain." I believe he fought in the Civil War; he applied for a Confederate pension. He ended up in Texas - I think. He married Matilda Freeman of Hanover, Germany. They had 7 children - Lillie, Walter (my granddad), Daisy, Mary, Rosa, Floyd, and Bessie.
