I am searching for information on my great grandfather and his family. The information I have so far found on him is as follows:

Howard Fremont Deane
b. Nov. 6, 1881 Searsburg, NY
d. Nov. 13, 1947 Watkins Glen, NY
Parents: unknown

I have been told that Howard's wife was named Blanch.
His son, my grandfather, Harold Charles Deane, was born Dec. 26, 1912 in The Village of Owego, Tioga Co., NY. I have a copy of his birth certificate. He later dropped the "e" from his last name.

I received a reply to a message board posting that says Howard is found in the following census':

--possible hit in Cedar Grove Township, Exxex, New Jersey, 1910 Census
--definite hit in Elmira, Chemung Co., NY 1920 Census at age 37, with wife Blanch age 31 and son Harold age 7 and 2 "roomers".

The same person who gave me the above info says that she found a Draft Registration Card for Howard F. Deane which gives the following info:
Howard F. Deane
Dated: Sept. 12, 1918
Residence: Elmira, Chemung Co., NY
Wife: Blanch Deane
DOB: 11/6/1881

Howard and Blanch apparently had another child, Howard, born after Harold. He was called Uncle Junior for his entire adult life. Howard Jr. never married or had any children. There is some speculation that there was a 3rd son who died in a drowning incident but no name or other info has turned up.
[I have speculated that Howard and the younger son were actually the two "roomers" mentioned in the 1920 Census and that rather than being "sons" they may have been taken in by the family. My mom says Howard Jr. and Harold looked too much alike for that to be true. I have not discounted it because my dad says that Uncle Junior was "a little" younger than Harold, but in the 1920 Census Harold was 7 and there was no mention of Howard, only the 2 roomers.]

If anyone has any leads or information on who Howard may have descended from, or on the family of his wife, please email me at
Any information is greatly appreciated.

thank you
