Thank you so much for the post. I too have been puzzled with the Deen family of Conecuh. My descendent, Susan Elizabeth Deen is listed in family posts as being born May 1850, Old Town, Conecuh Co., AL and being married ca. 1874 to James F. (or L.) Barrow b. September 1845 Old Town, Conecuh Co., AL. I am beginning to wonder if these dates may be incorrect, for the Susan, age 12, you list on the 1850 Conecuh Co., AL census is the only Susan that I have been able to find. This census would put her birth ca. 1838. What are your thoughts?
Also, you mentioned that you thought that Ransom L(unsford)Deen's wife was possibly Sarah Ann Deen, age 40 on the 1850 census. Do you then think that her full maiden name was Sarah Ann Hawthorn?
A friend of mine tells a story that she was employed many years ago as a young girl to transcribe the Conecuh Co., AL records and that at that time she did the best that she could to decipher the old handwriting and type it into lists still used today. She says that many times she would just guess at the handwriting and continue typing. This may account for some of the errors in the Deen family.
