Hi John,
As I mentioned in my post of last evening, I am so delighted to hear from you. I would love to correspond and to learn about the Deane family connections in Barbados.

Here is what I know about my grandfather Charles Evelyn Deane. He entered through Ellis Island twice. The first time he came with his father and brother; the second time, several years later, he came by himself. My guess is that the first time his father brought the boys to find work, and that Charles Evelyn Deane made one more trip home before returning for good.

He lived in Brooklyn, worked for Fred S. James, an insurance company. On Sept. 11, 1915 he married Sarah Veronica Nolan, born Sept. 12, 1880. She was the first-born child of Catharine Whelan (b. about 1860 in Ireland, immigrated around 1875) and Philip Francis Nolan (b. about 1850 in Baltimore). They lived in Brooklyn, New York

Charles and Sarah's first child, a girl named Evelyn, was born June 16, 1916. The little girl died June 16th, 1918 (on her birthday) of whooping cough and pneumonia. My mother, Helen Mary Deane, was born July 27th, 1920 to Charles and Sarah.

Charles' older brother, George, went to Canada and worked in shipbuilding, and my mother has letters written by him. My mother remembers hearing her mother telling of Charles and George sending money back to Barbados to support a maiden sister. She sent lovely hand-made items to Charles' babies in return.

Charles Evelyn Deane died very young, at age 33, in September of 1921 of tuberculosis. They lived in Caldwell NJ at the time of his death because it was generally to have better air for people suffering from tuberculosis than in the city.

After Charles died, the family in Barbados offered to send money to support my mother (only a year old), but Sarah refused. She apparently lost all contact with his family, and my mother never knew any of her father's relatives. Mother was Charles Evelyn Deane's only surviving child.

My mother married my father, William Arthur Babson, on July 26, 1952. They had four children:
1. William Arthur Babson, Jr. B. May 29, 1953. Married Deborah Black, June 26, 1980. Children: Jill Amanda, born Sept. 8, 1983; Rachael, born March 20, 1988. Jill married Adam Grundy in 2009.
2. Sarah Elizabeth Babson, born Dec. 3, 1954. Has not married.
3. Me - Mary Deane Babson, born Jan. 11, 1957. Married Jeffrey C. Fuhrer, Aug. 23, 1980. Children: Margaret Ann, born Sept. 27, 1983; John Babson, born Feb. 18, 1985; and Jeffrey H., born Jan. 26, 1989.
4. Ann Margaret (called Nancy), born April 2, 1963. Married first Jon Casello, one child, Sanne Marie, born Aug. 4, 1998. Married second, Joseph Gullota.

So my mother has ten living descendants. Mom is spry and bright and completely with-it as she approaches 91. What an amazing lady!

By the way, on one of the Ellis Island entry forms, it lists Charles Eveyln Deane's race as "colored." My mother has a picture of him that does not look as if he had African heritage, but it would be interesting to know. Are the Deanes a mixed-race family, or did the immigration official just make a mistake?

My mother says that her mother (Sarah Nolan Deane always told her that Charle's father was an Episcopalian minister, but that her father's death certificate indicated that her grandfather had been a tailor. Do you know what George Elviston Deane's profession was?

We would love to know all about her Barbados family. Thanks for whatever you have to share.

Best wishes,
Mary
