Thanks, Jacob,
That court case was between Dearing's estate and A.B. Rucker, not Valentine Rucker. The "feud" between William Dearing and Valentine Rucker had its origin in a dispute over a fence between their two properties, according to the ex slave's account, or, according to a family legend as recorded in the Amherst County Historical Museum, because two of the Rucker boys had beaten up Dearing, and his mother sent him out to get revenge. The latter story is improbable for several reasons, and I favor the former.Valentine was apparently a hot-headed man, recently back from the War, and Dearing evidently was no cool cucumber, either.I'm enjoying puzzling it all out, and I'll write the story sometime this Spring or Summer, after another Amherst visit.
