Which Susan Gill?

In the Roane County TN Schools list for 1872, a Susan Gill is listed as a student at Emory School. Does anyone have any information on this person?
My great-grandfather, James Wiley DeArmond (1850-1927), was the son of Susan (Hammond, Hammonds, Hammon, Hammons) Gill. Does anyone know if she was married to a Gill, or if she just used that name? Some of her children were sired by a John DeArmond. Some of her children used the Hammons name. It's all very confusing.
Obviously the schoolgirl Gill of 1872 is not my ancestor, but who is she?
