The following is a letter written by Maurice Hamner Garland of Lynchburg, Virginia to Harry Beverley Deas of St. Louis, Mo. in response to a request for family history. It is the first time I have seen actual dates for the birth and marriage of General John Garland. It also lists his children. The first section is the letter to Deas; the second was the sheet filled with family input.

Mr. Harry B. Deas
St. Louis, Mo.

D Sir
Your of the 26th ult. with letter of Spotswood Garland and blank genealogical paper came duly in hand but mission of business taking me several times from home – has occasioned this delay in responding to your request for information in regard to your “Garland” connection.
I have filled out the blank as far as my information will enable me.
I met your parents during the War, but was more intimate with Gen’l Longstreet & family who were a good deal in Lynchburg – and with whose staff I served a short while, the winter of 1862 at Fredericksburg –
Your Uncle John Garland and daughters have been guest at my home in Lynchburg –
If in your investigations in matters of Family Hist. you gather any thing in addition to what I have given you, I would be glad of the information – as I have frequently to answer inquiries from all parts of the Country – of some connection wishing to know where they belong –

Very Respectfully
Your Kinsman
Maurice H. Garland
